Sea Kayaker course (EPP2 -level) in the Archipelago National Park in Korppoo

Paddler 2 – Advanced sea kayaking course
On this course you will learn a lot more about paddling and gain confidence in your own paddling. During the course we will learn how to properly tilt the kayak, how to use your hips when paddling and how to take support from the water. We will paddle in different conditions, practicing the kayak's behaviour in wind and waves. We will deepen our knowledge of forward paddling technique and steering. We will go through rescue and towing techniques and also learn more about group paddling and navigation.
The Academy's advanced course in sea kayaking (Paddle 2) follows the content recommendations of the Finnish Canoeing and Rowing Federation and the Finnish Sea Kayaking Association. The course takes place in the conditions of an excursion in the Archipelago Sea National Park, overnight stay on the island in your own tents.
Course time: The course starts at 10:00 on the first day and finishes at 17:00 the following day. (If you wish, a skills test afterwards from 17:30 to 20:00)
Starting point: Korpoström Skärgårdscentrum, Korppoo (Korpoströmintie 832, 21720 Korppoo). See more detailed travel directions to Korppoo here. The course days are spent on the water in the Archipelago Sea National Park, staying overnight on a desert island.
Course content:
Practical paddling skills
- Tilting the kayak (different aspects of tilting, contact with the kayak, steering the kayak by tilting, use of the hips)
- Supports (Lower support in motion and stationary, lower support inversion. Basics of mobile paddle support)
- Turning and steering the kayak in different situations (turning, paddling, tilting)
-Effective forward paddling (body rotation, footwork, body position, paddling trajectory in the water)
- Moving sideways (different techniques)
- Basics of paddling in waves and wind (kayak behaviour, trim, weight transfer, use of fins, making the most of the conditions)
Safety skills
- Falling over (falling over in different situations and emptying the kayak)
- Self-rescue (getting back into the kayak on your own)
- Pair rescue (how to get a swimmer from the water into a kayak, acting as both rescuer and rescued)
- Assisted kayak spin, or "bow-tie"
- Basics of towing (working towing system, coupling and uncoupling the tow, supporting
in a paired board, contact bite)
- Paddler safety equipment
- Paddling as a group
- Route planning and weather conditions (in general and in the Archipelago Sea)
- Navigation skills
- The risks of paddling

Prerequisites: The prerequisite for participation in the course is completion of the Paddle 1 Basic Course or otherwise acquired basic paddling skills at Paddle 1 / EPP1 level. (See: Participant instructions)
Price: €240 (incl. VAT).
If you wish, you can rent a dry suit from us for the course for 65€ (sizes M - XL)
The price includes: Instruction, sea kayak, paddle, opening cover and paddling vest.
Number of participants: maximum 6 persons
Trainer: Gabriel Sydänvirta. Paddling instructor for the Finnish Sea Paddling Association and the Finnish Paddling and Rowing Federation. Gabriel lives in Korppoo.
Overnight stay: The course will take place in the Archipelago Sea National Park, staying overnight on the island in your own tents. We can rent tents and other camping equipment if needed, just ask!
Take with you: Paddling gear, food and snacks, cooking utensils, a change of clothes, your own tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad. You will receive a more detailed list of the equipment you need by email (we also offer camping and cooking equipment for hire). If you wish, you can also participate in the course with your own kayak.
